Lightningstrike stood by the entrance of the camp waiting for his apprentice Dustpaw. It was time for him to learn to hunt.

(Sorry for the lateness I was on a short vacation x__x) Dustpaw dashed out of the apprentice's den, eager for his first training session. As he reached his mentor's side, the gray apprentice asked, "What are we doing today?"

"We're going to learn how to hunt fish and land animals." he replied. "But first we'll learn how to hunt land animals.'' Then he bended his legs, flattened his back, and put his tail on the ground. ''This is how you crouch.'' he meowed. ''Try to duplicate it.''

Dustpaw dropped to the ground. He attempted to mimick Lightningstrike, but he was slightly off. As he started stalking, his paws thumped loudly on the ground, and his rump was stuck in the air. "How was that?", the gray apprentice asked eagerly as he sat up again.

"Your rump needs to be lower in the air." Lightningstrike critiqued. "You also want your paws more in front, so you can put all your weight on your haunches. This reduces the noise and puts more power in your pounce."

Dustpaw nodded, and tried again. This time his rump was lower. He pushed his paws to the front. However, he slipped on a wet leaf, and fell on his belly. "Mouse-dung!", he hissed, standing back. Swatting the leaf away, the gray apprentice tried again. His crouch was noticeably better.

"Nice crouch!" Lightningstrike praised his apprentice. "Now, do you see that leaf over there?" he asked. "Crouch and pounce on it."

"Thank you!", Dustpaw meowed to his mentor. He sat up, locking his gaze on the leaf. Then the gray apprentice dropped into a crouch. He brushed his paws slightly against the ground, trying not to make a sound. When Dustpaw was close enough, he pounced, grabbing the leaf in his jaws. "How was that?", he asked, dropping the foliage at his mentor's paws.

"That was perfect!" Lightningstrike meowed. "Now we can try out your crouch on some prey." the tom said. "Come on, lets hunt by the river." Lightningstrike instantly started to walk out of the camp entrance.

Dustpaw breathed a silent sigh of relief at his mentor's praise. He said nothing, only following Lightningstrike out of the camp.

After a few minutes, the 2 cats arrived at one of the few foresty parts of the territory. "All right, Dustpaw." Lightningstrike said. "Do you want to try first, or do you want an example?" Lightningstrike asked.

"I'd like an example first, Lightningstrike.", Dustpaw meowed. He took a seat near an oak tree, his pale eyes burning with determination.

"Okay." said Lightningstrike. He crouched behind a bush and waited for a while. Then a squirrel scrambled out of a tree running for a nut. "Wait..." whispered Lightningstrike. The squirrel ran over and grabbed it. "Now!" he said, and pounced on the squirrel and killed it with a bite to the neck. "And that is how we kill squirrels." Lightningstrike meowed.
